Describe the method used by the author of the study.
Discuss the sample size used in the study.
The sample size of the study was 186 patients who were taken from a total of 1298 patients that had laparoscopic anterior resection for rectal cancer. The size of the sample seems adequate for the study.
Discuss the limitations of the article: limited sample size, design flaws, and/or author bias.
The study included 186 patients who had stage 2 or stage 3 rectal cancer, had neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy and LAR surgery. Team A were patients who had a loop ileostomy while team B were patients who had a loop transverse colostoomy. Team A had 77 patients and team B had 109. These 2 teams equal the 186 patients in the study. Both teams had similar commorbidities and BMI. The study used data from inpatient and outpatient medical records and it was retrospective. The data was from January 2009 to December 1016. Yes, I think the correct method was used because demographic characteristics, BMI, and preexisting co-mmorbidites were similar in both groups. It was good that they used an independent statistician to do the analysis because this decreases the chances of bias and miscalculation. The statistical package for social sciences software was used.

  2. 1. Discuss the sample size used in the study.

The authors presented 3 case studies of 3 patients with varying diagnoses.

    2. Discuss the limitations of the article: limited sample size, design flaws, and/or author bias.

The article has a very small sample size. More subjects are needed to provide more compelling evidence and data to support the authors' recommendations.

  3. How does this research article compare to our practice, policy and procedure?

-Utilizing support surfaces for patients who are at risk for pressure ulcers is one of the preventative safety measures. At PSJMC, we use support surfaces which include mattresses, chair cushion, heel protector to offload pressure from skin area.We frequently assess patient's skin each shift and use Braden Scale for pressure ulcer risk assessment. Support surfaces are utilized for patients with Braden scale of <18.Different types of bed/ mattresses are used depending on severity of patient's wound /pressure ulcers.

What are the advantages and disadvantages to the proposed recommendation in the article?

-Patients who are unable to move independently or have reduced ability to feel pain are at risk for pressure ulcers.Patients affected with pressure ulcers also experience high level of pain and discomfort. Utilizing different types of support surfaces help in prevention or improvement of pressure ulcers and pain/discomfort in patients.

  4. This article was a review of 3 case studies of patients with varying diagnoses and all 3 patients had use of different mattresses/pressure relieving devices.

While interesting it is extremely limited in its use or application as there is no consistent measurable factors used in this study. It is merely a subjective report of 3 different patients.

  5. Discuss the sample size used in the study?
The authors sample size was very limited, as it was only done on 3 seperate case studyes of 3 patients with a varying diagnosis.

Discuss the limitations of the article: Iimited sample size, design flaws, and/ or author bias.

This article study does have its flaws, as the sample size was very small. Its sample size was based on three different case studies, with varying diagnosis, and each using different pressure relieving devices. By using three different studies, you would be inconsistent, and unable to measure any factors for this study.

  6. Describe the method used by the author of the study
1). The authors utilized case studies as their research method. 3 cases and their interventions were outlined. The evidence gleaned from this study shows how important the proper surface is to alleviating PU and shearing.

Was the correct method used? Why or why not?
2). I feel that the correct method was not used in this study, the authors should have used another, wider research method. With a sample size of 3, the results can be circumstantial. The authors addressed this in their paper, however, stating that the evidence was qualitative rather than quantitative.

  7. Discuss the sample size used in the study.

The sample size used in the study was 3 case studies of 3 different patients with varying medical conditions.

Discuss the limitations of the article: limited sample size, design flaws, and/or author bias

A limitation of the study was the limited sample size of only 3 case studies. Having a small sample size can lead to inconsistent results that cannot be generalized to other patient populations.

  8. Discuss the sample size used in the study.

This study gathered its sample size from 3 different case studies, of 3 different patients with varying medical conditions.

Discuss the limitations of the article, limited sample size, design flaws, and/or author bias.

This study was very limited, since its sample size was 3 different case studies. This is a big design flaw, as it can lead to inconsistent results. This study should have focused on using a wider research method to gather more data and have better results.

  9. Discuss the sample size used in this study.
This study was based on three different patients, the data was gathered from different case studies, and each of the patients have a varying medical conditions.

Discuss the limitations of the article, limited sample size, design flaws, and/or author bias.
This study was interesting had limitations due to being based on three patients. A study this limited is always going to have an inconsistent result, and to actually to gather better data one must but either have a big population sample size, or use a different method to gather more data to obtain better results for their study.
