Discuss the research question or main problem discussed in the study
-Nurses play a vital role in the prevention and management of skin tears as well as implementing the hospital protocols.Skin tears are common injuries in hospital based setting such as ICU and OR.In these environments , where more tools and equipments are used for care and treatment , insufficient attention is given to skin tear. Research shows that nurses generally have low levels of knowledge about skin tears and that their knowledge and skills regarding skin tear management need to be improved through trainings. Certain nursing interventions such as hygienic care, patient transfer and dressing changes may increase the risk of developing skin tears. Skin tears if left untreated can lead to pain, delayed wound healing, prolonged hospital stay and increase hospital cost.
What are the advantages of the proposed recommendations in the article?
-Hospitals / Institutions should standardize trainings to protect skin integrity and structure then to unit based needs. Active participation of nurses in professional development processes should be supported in clinical practices.Further studies to examine the effect of educational interventions on clinical outcomes and knowledge. The increase in education level enhances nurses’ knowledge and skills regarding skin tears.Nurses can reduce skin tear related injuries by identifying patient at risk, implementing preventive measures and using appropriate dressings.
Methods: The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge levels of nurses working in operating rooms and ICUs regarding skin tears and what are the factors affecting the level of skin tear knowledge among these populations. In order to assess knowledge levels, this descriptive study collected data face to face using a demographic characteristic form developed by the researchers based on the literature, which included information on gender, educational status and training related to skin tears, wound care, and pressure tears, as well as the Skin Tear Knowledge Assessment Instrument. This assessment consists of 20 multiple choice questions covering six domains of skin tear knowledge: etiology, classification and observation, risk assessment, prevention, treatment and special patient groups. Each question has 1 correct answer and is scored as either 1 for a correct answer, or 0 for an incorrect answer. Higher scores indicate a greater knowledge about skin tears.
Sample size: A total of 195 nurses were invited to participate, including 103 from ICU and 92 from OR. Of these, 157 nurses (81 from ICU and 92 from OR) agreed to participate, resulting in a response rate of 80.5%. The remaining 38 were not included in the study because of annual leave, declining to participate or having less than 6 months of professional experience. Seventy-six percent of OR nurses and 53.1% of ICU nurses were female.
Bethany Sobesto 4/13/26 Discuss the research question or main problem discussed in the study? This study was done from December 2024 to April 2025, to assess the nurses ability to prevent and treat skin tears. These nurses were from the OR and ICU at a research hospital. The nurses knowledge level was assessed. Part of what the study aimed to do was to figure out which factors played a part in having nurses who were competent in skin tear prevention and treatment. It was found that the educational level and experience as a nurse had a large impact on the nurses ability to treat and prevent these wounds. Discuss the sample size used in the study. 195 nurses were in a pool to possibly be used in the research study. Only 157 of these nurses were used due to some being ineligible and other not wanting to be a part of the study. Of the 157 nurses, 81 were from the ICU and 76 were from the OR. The majority of the participants were female and had at least an undergraduate degree.
What are the advantages and disadvantages to the proposed recommendations in the article? In this article the OR and ICU nurses Knowledge of skin tears was suboptimal and the study recommended further active participation of nurses in a professional development process should be supported in clinical practice. The advantage here would be that increased education and understanding of skin tears would be to decrease their prevalence and increase patient outcomes. The disadvantages would be the increase in costs to educate the nurses and the increased time it would take to complete this extra education.
The research question of this study is what is the knowledge level of intensive care and operating room nurses in regards to skin tears. The study found that the knowledge level was suboptimal and could benefit from additional training and education. The study did find an increase in knowledge about skin tears in nurse who had higher educational status and more clinical experience.
February article: Intensive Care and Operating Room Nurses’ Knowledge Regarding Skin Tears
Question #1 Discuss the research question or main problem discussed in the study?
Skin tears are common injuries, especially in hospital-based settings such as intensive care and operating rooms. These injuries usually occur as a result of skin vulnerability and incorrect use of medical devices. Nurses have an important role in the prevention, early detection and management of skin tears. Previous research has shown that nurses' knowledge of skin tears varies and is sometimes inadequate. There are a limited number of studies comparing the knowledge levels of operating room and intensive care nurses. The questions that were addressed in this study were the level of knowledge of operating room and intensive care nurses regarding skin tear and the factors that are affecting their level of knowledge.
Question #2: Discuss the limitations of the article: limited sample size, design flaws, and/or author bias
This study has several limitations which should be taken into consideration when interpreting the findings. The sample of the study was limited to nurses in a specific institution, and the generalizability of the results to the entire population of nurses is limited. Data were collected through self-report, and nurses' preventive interventions for skin tears and the accuracy of their implementation could not be assessed through direct observation. Therefore, additional research is recommended to determine the factors that prevent the dissemination of accurate knowledge and practices and the underlying causes of these factors.
Discuss the research question or main problem discussed in the study? This study is used to understand the knowledge of both operating room and intensive care nurses on skin tears with patients. The two main questions that arise are: what is the level of knowledge of OR and ICU nurse and what are the factors that affect the level of knowledge regarding skin tears. This specific topic is studied because there is an international prevalence of skin tears reported is between 14.5%-18.9%, and unfortunately the recognition, identification, and reporting are traditionally insufficient.
Discuss the limitations of the article: limited sample size, design flaws, and/or author bias. There are several limitations in regards to this specific research analysis. The main limitation is regards to sample size the study is limited to a specific institution and only two of the units (OR and ICU) within that institution. The second limitation is the systemic approach to how information was collected. This was based on nurses self reporting rather than direct observation. This could be given based on a broad spectrum of knowledge and different levels of judgment based on the nurse's own perceptions of knowledge and understanding.
Discuss the research question or main problem discussed in the study? Skin tears are a prevalent but often under recognized type of injury in clinical settings ,particularly affecting vulnerable patients in intensive care and surgical environment. The Descriptive study was conducted between December 2024 and April 2025with 81 Intensive care and 76 operating room nurses at a training and research hospital .The Study Data were collected face o face using a descriptive characteristics form ,the Skin Tear Knowledge Assessment Instrument (OASES). The data were analyzed using SPSS software .Descriptive statistics ,including frequency ,percentage ,mean and standard deviation, were calculated .Additionally ,independent samples t tests, one way ANOVA and regression analysis were performed .Skin Tears are traumatic common wounds often under recognized by healthcare professionals .For high acuity patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU) and Operating Rooms (OR),recognizing the causes ,classifications and proper management of skin tears is essential to preventing chronic complications and prolonged hospital stays .
What are the advantages and disadvantages to the proposed recommendations in the article? Nurses Knowledge regarding skin tears directly impacts patient outcomes .High proficiency reduces pain, speeds healing and prevents costly complications ,while knowledge gaps can lead to delayed treatment and severe infections.
Advantages Proactive Prevention nurses equipped with proper knowledge can identify vulnerable patients and implement targeted prevention strategies ,such as adjusting adhesive removal techniques ,moisturizing fragile skin ,and padding bed rails
Accurate Identification and staging where Clinicians who understand skin tear knowledge Assessment instruments (OASES) can accurately differentiate between categories of skin tears, leading to appropriate treatment pathways
Optimized Wound healing by Correctly selecting moisture retentive ,non adherent silicone dressings promotes faster healing and reduces patient pain
Decreased Health Care Costs is an effective management to prevent secondary complications (e.g cellulitis, severe infection )and reduces both inpatient stays and institutional costs
Disadvantages /Risks Delayed or Inappropriate Care where gaps in education can cause nurses to use outdated treatments (e.g rigid adhesive strips )that strip skin, worsen the tear or delay wound closure
Higher Risk of Infection where it mismanaged wounds left open to the environment or dressed improperly are highly susceptible to pathogens .
Increased Patient Suffering which shows inaccurate assessments or harsh dressing changes cause preventable pain, limit patient mobility and lower overall quality of life
