Discuss the limitations of the article: limited sample size, design flaws, and/or author bias
Since the study was based on questionaires from people from 17 different countries, the patients may have had different types of medical devices and ostomy care products. This is variation in the circumstances of the participants and is a limitation of the study. Another limitation of the study is that the surveys were self reported and not confirmed by health care professionals. Additionally, symptoms like pain, itching, and burning were under-reported.
Describe the method used by the author. Was the correct method used?
The 2019 Ostomy Life Study distributed surveys to patients and nurses in 17 countries. Of the 54,000 surveys delivered, 5,187 people with ostomies participated and there were 328 nurses surveyed too. All the participants were over 18 years old. It was an online survey which was estimated to take 30 minutes to do. I believe this was a good method of data collection. The conclusion of the survey was the PSCs impair quality of life and are a financial burden on society.

  3. 1. Describe the method used by the author of the study. Was the correct method used? Why or why not?
The Ostomy Life Study 2019 utilized a patient survey in which 5,187 people with an ostomy participated in. The study also utilized a nurse survey in which 328 nurses participated in. I believe it was the correct method because this kind of data collection needs a qualitative measurement.

    2. Discuss the sample size used in the study.
The study had a huge amount of participants from different countries and demographics. Their participation showed a high incidence of peristomal skin complications and it also highlighted the direct and health-economic consequences of having compromised skin.

  4. Describe the method used by the author. Was the correct method used?

The author conducted the study with an online patient survey delivering up to 54,000 surveys to both patients with ostomies, and nurses who take care of those with ostomies. Of those with ostomies, 5,187 patients participated, and 328 nurses partook in the survey also. It was a relatively successful method, as it was able to collect data to see how PSC impair quality of life, and can also impact society financially.

The study was based on a questionnaires done from people in 17 different counties. Each country itself may have had a different type of medical device, and ostomy care products which could cause a variation of the study and adding a limitation to it. One big limitation was that surveys were self-reported and not conducted or confirmed by health care professionals making all responses biased to their own experience.

  5. Discuss the sample size used in this study
This study was a massive international endeavor in addressing peristomal complications. The authors distributed 54000 surveys to people that met the criteria of being over the age of 18 and having at least one enterostomal ostomy. Of those 54000, 5128 participants completed the survey. The nursing component of the survey was sent electronically and/or physically to nurses specializing in ostomies with 328 nurses completing the survey. The authors did not state how many nurses were given the survey to begin with. Both the people with ostomies and nurses surveyed were over the span of 17 countries.

Discuss the limitations of this article
There are a couple of limitations that stand out when reading this article. The first is that while there were an impressive 54,000 surveys sent out over 17 countries, these surveys were online. By only being online, we see limitations in terms of economic status, literacy, and access to technology. People in underserved or poorer communities may not have access to internet or a computer, thus limiting their ability to share their experiences. Similarly, by using an online tool, people with disabilities and or inability to read would have limited access to this survey unless they had an advocate or aid to help them. Interestingly, the nurse surveys were online and physical depending on geographical location. Another interesting limitation is that the majority of respondents from the ostomy population came from three countries, China, the United States, and Japan. However, the nursing survey participants came mainly from Europe. Therefore, there is a bit of disconnect between assessment and process in terms of nursing practice and the experience of the person living with an ostomy. To develop programs to improve the problem of peristomal complications, it would be beneficial to compare practice modalities in a specific country with perceived experience of a person living with a stoma in that specific country. It is hard to extrapolate recommendations when practitioners from the countries with the most respondents under reported and vice versa.

  6. Discuss the sample size used in the study.

The study had a good source of participants, since it was done with the use of an online survey. Able to get multiple participants from different counties, and demographics. It was able to gather data and show that there was a high incidence of peristomal skin complications, and highlight the direct and health-economic consequences of compromised skin.

Discuss the limitations of the article: Limited Sample Size, Design flaws, and/or author bias.

Since the study was done online, and done with 17 different counties, the equipment used for each care product varied, putting a limit on their study. To conduct a study properly it should have been based all on the same product to get a singular result regarding a product. Also, since the responses were all self-reported, none of the responses were confirmed by health care professionals test but through one’s own experience.

  7. 1. Discuss the sample size used in the study

This study was conducted internationally. The inclusion criteria was patients had to be over the age of 18 and having at least one enterostomal ostomy. The survey was distributed to more than 54,000 patients with an ostomy among 17 different countries. Additionally, the survey was also distributed to 328 nurses.

    2. Discuss the limitations of the article, limited sample size, design flaws, and/or author bias

There are a few limitations to this research article. First, the data is based on questionnaires sent to a broad population that spans multiple different countries. There is no standard across all of the countries that were surveyed regarding guidelines of stoma care and availability of ostomy care products. Second, all survey findings were self-reported and not confirmed by healthcare professionals. The article’s authors do acknowledge these limitations but note that regardless, because of the large number of respondents, the data is still valuable.
