Describe the method used by the author of the study.
This was an independent, nurse led patient study, of 58 patients from the United Kingdom. The aim of the study was to find out if a Manuka honey ouch would help decrease peristomal skin complications (PSC). Patients with PSC were given a questionnaire to see if they met criteria to be in the study. If they did meet criteria, they became part of the study. A second questionnaire was given at the end of the study to help determine the outcome.
Was the correct method used? Why or why not?
It seems the method used in the study was correct. The patients were supported by 32 SCNs who observed and helped collate the data. The SCNs did a peristomal skin assessment and facilitated the change of stoma pouch to the Manuka honey flange. The nurses made observations of the patient's peristomal skin, quality of life, and pouch adherence. They also recorded the patient's view of the pouch effectiveness.
Discuss the sample size used in the study.
A criticism of the study is the sample size was small. There were only 58 patients used in the study. With a small sample size, the data is less reliable than a large sample size.

  2. Stephanie Smith:
The method used by this study collecting data through patient self-responding to questionnaires. The goal was to determine if a particular topical treatment could prevent or improve treatment of peristomal moisture related skin damage and wounds.
This is a good way to get information, but it is limited by the patients assessment and willingness to answer questions. Whenever you rely on patients to self report, it can vary the results. It is a correct way, but more objective studies should also be done to correlate the results.

  3. Discuss the sample size used in the study.

I would say the sample size is small, with 58 patients from across the United Kingdom, supported by 32 SCNs from 26 independent centers.

Describe the method used by the author of the study
The study used a questionnaire to capture details of the patient's peristomal skin complications observed by the skin care nurse, of the patient was deemed suitable to participate by the skin care nurse and the patient gave consent of the skin care nurse.
The patient was shown the most suitable Manuka honey pouch as clinically determined by SCN. Both the SCN and the patient agreed a product evaluation period and also arranged to review the outcomes together. Then the second part of questionnaire was completed by the SCN.

  4. 1. Describe the Method used by the Authors of the study.

For this study, the authors used a questionnaire to gather the details of the patient’s peristomal skin complications and if the said patient is qualified to be part of the study, the patient gives consent to be part of it and was given Manuka honey pouch for the stoma, which then gets evaluated after if effective.

    2. Was the correct method used? Why or why not?

Yes, as questionnaire is one of the simple and direct ways to gather information for the study, such as if the subject patient is qualified to be part of the study.
