  1. Describe the Method Used for the Study

The research project took place in a large Midwestern academic center and they followed MKIT framework for their continuous quality improvement (CQI) process. They developed a skin care program and revised their guidelines regarding Incontinence Associated Dermatitis (IAD) based on best practice. An on-line education module was made available to all nursing staff. 73 nurses participated in IAD differentiation education with a pretest and post test comparison. The nurse’s knowledge significantly improved so the IAD differentiation education was added to the facility wide RN and CNS orientation modules. Evidence-based (EB) recommendations on usage of absorbent pads were included into the IAD procedural guidelines and a 2 minute video showing the new pad was developed and included in staff education. This information would be extended in the skills fair and new staff orientation. Enhancements to the EMR were added to capture IAD and the related nursing interventions and care plans. This would facilitate monitoring and identify trends in IAD prevalence and data review and determine the impact of the skin care program.

    Was Correct Method Used

I believe that the MKIT method used for this project was a good choice. This cyclic process used baseline information and post-implementation measurement, education, joint relationship building and EMR system changes to capture and audit data easily, assess the process and outcomes, and make revisions as appropriate. Stakeholders were identified and the project was supported by nurse leaders which are extremely important in order to establish common goals, provide resources, and oversee of the change process.
